OUR HISTORY

Between July 2021 and June 2022, the Centre for Ocean Literacy Collaboration (then called the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition), Cardiff University and the Marine Social Science Network, and University of Portsmouth initiated a collaborative research process to co-create a global ocean literacy research agenda through the co-development of the ocean literacy research community (OLRC). Facilitated over the course of a 3-part workshop series, this iterative process was kickstarted by the initiative’s selection as the inaugural UN Ocean Decade Laboratory, “An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean” – an edition of global laboratories to catalyze partnerships and co-design UN Ocean Decade actions.

The 3-part workshop series successfully resulted in:

    • Mapping the current global ocean literacy research ‘seascape’
    • Co-identifying current research gaps, priorities, and actions
    • Organizing research projects to address gaps and priorities, co-produce a series of outputs, and  strengthen knowledge exchange
    • Increasing support for and impact of ocean literacy research and initiatives
