Workshop Series

Between July 2021 and June 2022, the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, Cardiff University and the Marine Social Science Network, and University of Portsmouth initiated a collaborative research process to co-create a global ocean literacy research agenda through the co-development of the ocean literacy research community (OLRC). Facilitated over the course of a 3-part workshop series, this iterative process was kickstarted by the initiative’s selection as the inaugural UN Ocean Decade Laboratory, “An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean” – an edition of global laboratories to catalyze partnerships and co-design UN Ocean Decade actions.

The 3-part workshop series successfully resulted in:

    • Mapping the current global ocean literacy research ‘seascape’
    • Co-identifying current research gaps, priorities, and actions
    • Organizing research projects to address gaps and priorities, co-produce a series of outputs, and  strengthen knowledge exchange
    • Increasing support for and impact of ocean literacy research and initiatives

Key Contributions

An iterative process of workshops alongside participatory crowdsourcing methods with OLRC members. Co-identifying current ocean literacy research focal areas, gaps, and priorities; toward self-organizing into research groups to advance action and impact.
